President Andrés Manuel López Obrador suffered a serious setback this week to his attempt to push through congress an initiative enshrining his contentious electricity reform in the constitution. The initiative has no chance of prospering unless the opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) throws its weight behind it. But on 6 November the leader of the PRI in the lower chamber of congress, Rubén Moreira, scratched talks with the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), which he accused of authoritarianism the day after the party’s president, Mario Delgado, vowed to wipe the PRI off the face of the map in next June’s gubernatorial elections.
