MEXICO | Tax the rich. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador conducted just his second foreign visit on 9 November since taking office in December 2018 to deliver a speech at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Mexico is holding the rotating presidency of the UNSC this month and chose the topic of debate: “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Exclusion, Inequality, and Conflicts.” López Obrador proposed that the 1,000 wealthiest individuals on the planet and the 1,000 largest private corporations each make an annual contribution of 4% of their incomes, and the 20 largest economies stump up 0.2% of annual GDP, which he said could raise some US$1tn annually to help lift some 750m people worldwide out of poverty. “Nothing really substantial has been done to benefit the poor in the history of this organisation,” López Obrador said, “but it is never too late to ensure that justice is done”.
