* The tourism council at the Federação do Comércio de Bens, Serviços e Turismo do Estado de São Paulo (FecomercioSP) business association has released new data showing that the Brazilian tourism sector continues to suffer from the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The FecomercioSP expects Brazil’s tourism sector to generate R$130bn (US$23.3bn) in revenue this year; this would represent a 16% increase on 2020 but remains 22% below 2019 levels. Within this, the air transport sector is expected to have generated a total R$37.8bn in revenue in 2021, a 30.5% recovery compared with 2020 but still 36% below 2019 levels. Brazil’s tourism sector has been on a trajectory of recovery since April this year, but FecomercioSP representatives warn about the likely negative impact of current inflation levels on domestic tourism in the early part of 2022.
