* The Confederación Patronal de la República Mexicana (Coparmex), one of Mexico’s leading private sector lobbies, has issued a statement expressing concern at
“possible discrimination” in the US against Mexican car exports. Coparmex has said that it agrees with the Mexican economy ministry (SE) that proposed subsidies for US-manufactured electric vehicles, part of the ‘Build Back Better’ Act that US President
Joe Biden’s government is trying to push through congress, violate both the terms of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade and of agreements at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
“In the specific case of the USMCA, this proposal is a violation of the provisions on regional content, of which the objective is to succeed in greater and better integration of North American supply chains, [while this] action encourages a discriminatory act against the automotive industries of Mexico and Canada,” Coparmex said. The lobby group has said that it will support any legal action taken by the Mexican government should the Build Back Better Act be approved by the US senate,
“as trade agreements between two countries that have given rise to a healthy and productive bilateral relationship over the years must be respected”. End of preview - This article contains approximately 194 words.
