Surge in mining protests set to test Peru’s Castillo

Long-running Peruvian mining conflicts intensified between October and December, with protesters forcing an indefinite suspension of operations at the Las Bambas copper mine in the Apurímac region. This came despite the fact that MMG, the Chinese firm that operates Las Bambas, had made notable concessions to local residents in October. That victory for the protesters appears to have inspired an escalation of other mining disputes in the country. These developments will test the loyalties of President Pedro Castillo, who has spoken in favour of renegotiating contracts with key companies in the extractive sector. Castillo will face a tough balancing act between maintaining the support of his base and preventing investor flight.
