MEXICO: Shrinking middle class suggests pandemic recovery will be protracted

On 9 November, Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) published a report that measures the growth of the middle-class in Mexico over the last decade. Based on its national household and expenditure survey (ENIGH), it found there was a significant increase in the number of people who were impoverished between 2018 and 2020, as 6.2m people fell out of the middle-class during that period. While in 2018 there were 53.4m people in that category, two years later there were just 47.2m.
