EL SALVADOR: US sanctions more Bukele allies

Nicaragua is not the only Central American country currently causing difficulties for Washington. Relations with El Salvador (formerly a steadfast US ally) continue to deteriorate over President Nayib Bukele’s perceived authoritarianism and alleged government corruption which flies in the face of the US government’s emphasis on tackling corruption in line with its US$4bn comprehensive development plan for Central America to address the root causes of illegal migration. Indicative of these concerns, last week the US State Department and US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac) sanctioned three top officials for corruption: Bukele’s chief of cabinet, Carolina Recinos; the deputy security minister and prisons director, Osiris Luna; and Carlos Marroquín, the director of Unidad de Reconstrucción de Tejido Social (URTS) (a body which operates under the interior ministry to address the gang crisis).
