PERU: Mining protests under the spotlight

The government said on 15 December that it was ordering police to clear roadblocks by residents protesting various mining projects. Interior Minister Avelino Guillén said the aim was not to use “lethal weapons” or to harm protesters, but to also bear in mind that blocking traffic was a criminal offence, and that his ministry had an obligation to “maintain domestic order”.
