* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published figures on the closures of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), announcing a net loss of approximately 400,000 of these businesses between October 2020 and July 2021. Inegi reported that, over this period, 1.2m new MSMEs were launched, whilst 1.6m closed down. Whilst the figures demonstrate the continued impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on Mexico’s economy, Inegi noted that the proportion of MSMEs closing down was lower than that revealed in its last report covering the May 2019-September 2020 period, when 619,000 MSMEs were opened but 1m closed their doors for good. The latest report notes that MSMEs account for 99.8% of all businesses in Mexico.
