VENEZUELA: Opposition finds formula in repeat Barinas win

The repeat gubernatorial election in Venezuela’s Barinas state, held on 9 January, was viewed by the opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) as a naked attempt by the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) to cling onto power despite losing the state in the 21 November regional elections. Yet the opposition persevered, defeating PSUV heavyweight Jorge Arreaza with its third-choice candidate, Sergio Garrido, and expanding its margin of victory. If the fractious opposition can replicate the unified front that saw Garrido elected, it may have found a blueprint for future election campaigns.
