The sands in Peru’s congress have shifted again, with the legislature growing even more fragmented following the 9 January formation of the breakaway leftist party Perú Democrático (PD). Currently consisting of six deputies who abandoned the left-wing Perú Libre (PL) and centrist parties Acción Popular (AP) and Somos Perú (SP), PD’s profile was boosted on 12 January when Labour Minister Betssy Chávez (ex-PL) announced she had joined the group. PD has positioned itself as being in line with the objectives of President Pedro Castillo’s administration, and it appears to have been created out of frustration with infighting on the left.
