In brief: Inflation continues to rise in Argentina

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has published the latest consumer price index (IPC), showing that monthly inflation reached 3.8% in December, driving up the annual rate to 50.9%. This compares to 36.1% in December 2020. The steepest monthly price increases were in restaurants and hotels (5.9%), alcoholic drinks and tobacco (5.4%), transport (4.9%), and clothing and shoes (4.8%). The two categories with the lowest monthly inflation were education (1.0%) and health (0.5%). A survey of market analysts conducted by the central bank (BCRA), published 7 January, predicted that annual inflation would total 54.8% in 2022.
