Óscar Iván Zuluaga, the candidate for the ruling right-wing Centro Democrático (CD) in Colombia’s May presidential election, is cutting an increasingly solitary figure. On 15 January he announced that he would not be joining the right-of-centre Equipo por Colombia coalition, which will nominate a single candidate for the election’s first round, after facing pushback from other parties in the coalition. Zuluaga’s apparent intention to go it alone puts his own election bid in jeopardy, but also risks splitting the right-wing vote in an election that until now had seemed a three-horse race between the left, right, and centre.
