VENEZUELA: Possibility of recall referendum met with scepticism

Venezuela’s national electoral council (CNE) gave the go-ahead on 17 January to three requests from civil society organisations to begin proceedings that could result in a recall referendum on President Nicolás Maduro’s leadership. The opposition is far from confident, however, with the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) having survived previous attempts to remove it from power via such recall votes
