MEXICO: Electricity reform debated in congress

Talks got underway in Mexico’s congress on 17 January regarding the contentious electricity sector reform that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has long been seeking to pass. The open debate will feature input from industry experts, civil society organisations, and business leaders, as well as politicians. The debate is a chance for the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) to gain the backing it needs to approve a constitutional amendment that will finally allow the deadlocked bill to pass through congress, but winning the requisite two-thirds majority is a tall order.
