MEXICO: Extreme violence surges

Mexico continues to be afflicted by new bouts of extreme violence. On 16 January the coordinator of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción  Nacional (PAN) in the senate, Julen Rementería del Puerto, denounced the waves of extreme violence that have hit states including Veracruz, Michoacán, Morelos, and Zacatecas in recent days. “Day by day we see how violence advances without the federal government being capable of curbing it, much less reversing the trend,” Rementería said.
