In brief: First of many wind farms completed in Colombia’s La Guajira

* Colombia’s President Iván Duque has inaugurated the country’s largest windfarm, Parque Eólica Guajira 1, in Uribia municipality in the remote northern department of La Guajira. The wind farm, which features ten turbines and was constructed by the Spanish company Elecnor with an investment of Col$57bn (US$14.4m), is the first of 16 windfarms that are under construction in La Guajira. Guajira 1 is expected to generate 20 megawatts (MW), which Duque said would provide power to 33,300 households. Duque said that the next to be completed will be the much larger ‘Alpha’ and ‘Beta’ wind energy plants, under construction by the Portuguese EDP, which will together have 90 turbines capable of producing 504 megawatts. Mining and Energy Minister Diego Mesa emphasised La Guajira’s potential in wind energy, noting that the department “offers wind speeds that are double the world average” and that “the production of clean energy will be constant.”
