In brief: New visa to attract foreigners to Brazil

* The Brazilian government has announced the creation of a new visa, which would award temporary residency to foreigners working as ‘digital nomads’ for foreign companies from Brazil. A resolution regulating this new visa was published in the official gazette by the national immigration council (CNI), which is linked to the justice ministry. Foreigners who wish to apply for the visa must be able to prove that they can carry out their professional activities remotely as a ‘digital nomad’ using information and communication technology (ICT); they are not permitted to work for a Brazilian company and must provide proof of funds. Digital nomads will be given a one-year visa, renewable once. “The remuneration of digital nomads comes from outside [the country], and the resources brought in by these immigrants contribute to the national economy. This is an important step for Brazil to promote one of the more modern models of work”, CNI president and national justice secretary, José Vicente Santini, said.
