Xi Jinping have announced that Argentina has signed up to China’s global infrastructure plan known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) among other agreements struck during Fernández’s visit to Beijing, part of
an international tour which includes Russia and Barbados. Argentina’s Foreign Minister
Santiago Cafiero said that Argentina would obtain finance from China of some US$23.7bn. According to a press release by China’s foreign ministry, China is ready to work with Argentina to “
share development opportunities with Argentina and assist with its export expansion and industrial upgrade endeavours”. According to the same source the two sides also agreed to deepen cooperation in areas like trade, agriculture, energy, mining, infrastructure, investment, financing and the coronavirus (Covid-19) response. President Xi also called for greater effort by the two sides to foster new cooperation in the digital economy and green development.
