In brief: Mexico’s economy minister predicts modest GDP growth

*Mexico’s Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier has predicted that GDP will grow by up to 2.6% in 2022, slightly above the 2.27% predicted by Mexico’s central bank Banxico and significantly lower than the 5% predicted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In an interview with Mexico City-based news outlet Aristegui Noticias, Clouthier said many factors can positively or negatively alter yearly growth, “and I think the president is betting that positive things will happen”. Clouthier said that before the omicron variant of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic came to Mexico, the economy ministry had predicted 4% GDP growth for 2022.
