* The Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU), Brazil’s financial ombudsman, has given the green light to move forward with the privatisation of state-owned electricity company Eletrobras. With six votes to one, the TCU approved the financial model put forward by the government for the sale of the company. Overall, the federal government expects that the sale of Eletrobras will generate some R$67bn (US$13bn); this includes R$25.3bn directly for government coffers from the renewal of concession contracts for 22 hydroelectric plants. The government hopes to have received full approval to move forward with the privatisation of Eletrobras by May this year.
