*Foreign governments and international financial institutions have pledged US$600m in immediate and long-term aid for reconstruction and recovery in Haiti in response to the devastation wreaked by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake which struck in August 2021. The earthquake caused some 2,200 deaths and resulted in over 12,500 people injured, directly impacting up to 800,000 people on estimates from the United Nations (UN). The pledges were made at an international pledging conference held by the Haitian government with the hope of raising US$2bn needed for reconstruction. Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry said the promised aid is “beyond our expectations”. According to the UN, over US$1bn will be needed to rebuild, repair or reinforce 137,585 houses. The next most costly intervention is health and education which needs at around US$400m while the health sector will require around US$40m. Food security measures have been costed at almost US$55m and rehabilitating and building an improved transport infrastructure, at US$142m.
