In brief: Mexican gov’t in talks with US over halted avocado imports

* Mexico’s interior ministry (Segob) has said it supports the security measures proposed by the Michoacán state government in response to safety concerns raised by the US agriculture department (USDA), which led to the US suspending imports of avocado from Michoacán. Segob said it has closely followed the conversations between Michoacán state governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and security officials from the US embassy in Mexico, which aim to restart the export of avocados from Michoacán, Mexico’s principal avocado-producing state. The US halted imports after an official from the US animal and plant health inspection service (Aphis) received a threatening phone call while carrying out inspection work in Uruapan city, Michoacán. Last year Mexican producers exported 1.36m tonnes of avocados which translated into sales of over US$3.46bn. The US is the main consumer of Mexican avocados.
