This February 2022 edition of the
Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America begins in
Guatemala, which recently marked the 25th anniversary of the signing of the peace accords that ended one of the longest armed conflicts in Latin America’s history (1960-1996). Human rights ombudsman Jordán Rodas and US-based lobby group Washington Office on Latin America (Wola) are among those warning of backsliding under the government led by President Alejandro Giammattei, and of a dismantling of institutions put in place to ensure the implementation of the peace accords’ recommendations. Yet Wola highlights that against all the odds, high-profile transitional justice cases are making their way through the country’s courts.
