Extreme weather conditions ravage Southern Cone

Bitter recriminations have broken out in Argentina among different levels of government controlled by the country’s two main rival coalitions over devastating forest fires. The raging fires have razed forests and drought-scorched wetlands in the north-eastern province of Corrientes on a scale unparalleled in recent history. The lack of preparedness and slow response, exacerbated by deficient cooperation, contributed to the severity of the fires, which are likely to become an ever-more common feature of climate change, exacting a heavy human and economic toll. Inadequate preparation and cooperation for extreme weather phenomena were also in evidence in southern Brazil this week after torrential downpours triggered mudslides in the city of Petrópolis, claiming dozens of lives.
