MEXICO: Federal judiciary implicated in corruption allegations

Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office (FGR) has said it is seeking prison sentences of more than 40 years for four high-profile lawyers accused of extortion. The accusations against the lawyers, who are allegedly close to former presidential adviser Julio Scherer Ibarra, were made by another high-profile lawyer, Juan Collado. The allegations point to an alleged corruption and influence peddling scheme within the federal judiciary, spearheaded by Scherer, and, if proven, could cause discomfort for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has previously said Scherer was “like my brother”.
