HONDURAS: Castro fulfils another campaign promise

The new leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro has made good on another electoral pledge. At the start of the week the ministry of energy, natural resources, environment & mines announced that environmental permits for Honduran metal and non-metal mining will be cancelled, and open-pit mining will be prohibited. The move, which follows in the footsteps of Costa Rica (in 2010) and El Salvador (2017), has been welcomed by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Honduras and local NGOs.
