*Guatemala’s economy minister
Antonio Malouf has announced he will step down as of tomorrow (11 March). In the post since the government led by President
Alejandro Giammattei took office in January 2020, Malouf did not give reasons for his decision beyond saying it was due to “
future projects which would prevent him from continuing in the role”. He leaves the post at a critical time for Guatemala which, as elsewhere, is facing a
crisis due to the rise in living costs and fuel prices as a result of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. President Giammattei has yet to name Malouf’s replacement.
