PERU: Castillo scrapes victory in cabinet confidence vote

Peru’s President Pedro Castillo dragged another cabinet over the line on 8 March, winning a congressional confidence vote that secured the position of his fourth prime minister in seven months. Castillo’s latest cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Aníbal Torres, was approved by only the smallest of margins, but he at least avoided the humiliation of being sent back to the drawing board. More broadly, however, Castillo remains in significant political peril, with the opposition presenting an impeachment motion on the same day accusing him of involvement in the granting of corrupt state contracts.
