ECUADOR: Seeking deeper security partnerships

Defence Minister Luis Hernández announced on 4 March that President Guillermo Lasso’s administration will bolster its military cooperation with the US, with Ecuador’s armed forces set to receive equipment and training. Three days later, Hernández met in Quito with representatives from Israel’s defence ministry, who outlined Israeli innovations in military technology – possibly indicating that the government will turn to high-tech and intelligence-based strategies in response to a recent explosion in violent crime. There is little doubt that new strategies are needed, after last year’s homicide rate nearly doubled to reach its highest level since 2012.
