* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for retail trade, which show that sales grew 0.8% in January compared with December 2021. This represents a small recovery of the retail sector, which had fallen 1.9% in December compared with November. In year-on-year terms, however, the volume of Brazil’s retail trade shrank 1.9% compared with January 2021, the sixth consecutive negative year-on-year result. Most of the sector’s retail categories saw a negative result for their volume of sales in January, with for example clothing falling 3.9% month-on-month and supermarkets, food, & drink shrinking 0.1% - but the positive performance of information & technology office equipment (+0.3%), pharmaceutical, medical & orthopaedic products (+3.8%) and other products of personal domestic use (+9.4%) underpinned the month-on-month growth of sales in January.
