Ramón Fiestas, president for Latin America at the Belgium-headquartered Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), an industry grouping, has said that Mexico would lose as much as US$3bn a year in investment in wind energy, if President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposed energy reform is passed. Fiestas pointed out that this figure could be double when considering the loss of investment in solar energy too, speaking at a press conference to announce the upcoming edition of the Mexico WindPower conference in Mexico City (CDMX) on 23 and 24 March. López Obrador’s contentious electricity reform would confer 54% of the domestic energy market to the state-run electricity firm Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), side-lining private renewable energy companies. Voting on the proposed reform in congress was recently
postponed, given that a consensus between political parties had not yet been reached on the matter.
