MEXICO: Opposition rejects ‘propaganda’ decree

In the context of Mexico’s upcoming presidential recall vote, the definition of ‘government propaganda’ has become a hot topic. Last week, the senate passed a decree which narrowed the definition, permitting public officials to speak openly about the recall vote without being cautioned for spreading propaganda. The decree was celebrated by the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) but has been met with pushback from the political opposition and with indifference from the national electoral institute (INE).
