MEXICO: López Obrador under pressure over Russia stance

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is beginning to feel the heat over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. One of the largest democracies in the world, exercising the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Mexico might have been expected to lead the way in condemning Russia’s unprovoked aggression. But the controversial formation of a pro-Russia group in Mexico’s congress, and claims by the head of the US Northern Command during a US senate hearing that Russia’s military intelligence service is using Mexico as a key listening post, have ratcheted up pressure on the López Obrador administration to pick a side.
