COLOMBIA: Petro hoping against the odds for a first-round victory
Frontrunner Gustavo Petro, of the left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition, is stamping on the accelerator in his campaign to win in the first round of Colombia’s presidential election on 29 May. Petro is desperate for a decisive first round victory – for which he needs 50% +1 of the popular vote. This, because the latest opinion poll numbers suggest it will be more difficult for him to prevail in the second round, which would be held on 19 June.
