In brief: Cuba announces maintenance of power plants

* Cuba’s state energy company Unión Eléctrica (UNE) has announced that maintenance is being carried out at four thermoelectric power plants around the island. The works are intended to guarantee the stability of service and to restore two units in Mariel municipality (Artemisa province). UNE also announced unforeseen disruptions to service due to damage at power stations in the municipalities of Felton (Holguín province) and Nuevitas (Camagüey province). UNE assured citizens that it was working intensively to get both units up and running as soon as possible and will reprogramme operations in each of the affected territories to reduce the impact on the population. Frustration at repeated blackouts was a contributing factor to the unprecedented protests which took place in July 2021 over economic and health-related grievances. Most recently, Cuba’s main power plant Antonio Guiteras, which is located in Matanzas province, was forced out of action for a few days last month due to a boiler malfunction. This led the authorities to instruct all provinces in Cuba to reduce their energy use. In a step to combat shortages, on 2 April the Cuban government announced that a fifth floating powerplant has been acquired through a Turkish company. The unit is intended to reinforce energy generation, thereby easing pressure on the national system and reducing blackouts.
