In brief: Monthly inflation in Chile at highest level since 1993

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has announced that monthly inflation reached 1.9% in March, its highest level since 1993. The increase brings year-on-year inflation to 9.4%, its highest since 2008. Monthly inflation was particularly pronounced in the categories of education (6.6%) and food and non-alcoholic drinks (3.9%). The latest figures come after Chile’s central bank (BCCh) updated its 2022 inflation forecast on 30 March to predict that annual inflation could peak at 10% later this year before falling to 5.6% by December, with average yearly inflation in 2022 expected to be around 8.2%.
