PERU: Ending the cycle of political instability
Peru is in “intensive care”, according to comments made by Cardinal Pedro Barreto in an interview published on 17 April, Easter Day, by the national daily La República. Barreto has come in for heavy criticism from the Marxist Perú Libre (PL), which brought Castillo to power, and the political opposition for a meeting with Peru’s head of state on 13 April. He insisted that Castillo had extended an invitation to him and that he accepted because he believed passionately in building consensus rather than confrontation to take Peru forwards.
