VENEZUELA: Opposition rejects calls for lifting sanctions

Venezuela’s fractious political opposition has largely united against a letter from 25 representatives from Venezuelan civil society and the private sector addressed to US President Joe Biden. The signatories urged Biden to abandon sanctions on Venezuela and throw his support instead behind efforts to resume suspended negotiations between the opposition and President Nicolás Maduro’s administration. Opposition leaders have criticised the letter for portraying sanctions as a key cause of Venezuela’s ills, rather than the government’s authoritarianism and economic mismanagement.
