VENEZUELA: Combating corruption, a deferred priority

“It cannot be forgiven”. This was the stark message of the government strongman and first vice president of the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, for officials implicated in corruption. Speaking during the second plenary of the fifth congress of the PSUV in Caracas on 23 April, Cabello urged party members to denounce corruption involving government officials if they became aware of it. On the same day, President Nicolás Maduro promised the PSUV congress that the government would root out corruption in the health sector. Past precedent suggests that words speak much louder than actions when it comes to combating corruption within the Bolivarian apparatus.
