ECUADOR: Lasso takes on ‘cowardly’ judges

Two judicial rulings in Ecuador have triggered a spat between the government and the constitutional court (CC), after President Guillermo Lasso warned that the country risks being “besieged by criminals released by corrupt, cowardly judges”. The CC has accused the government of interference, after Lasso’s intervention resulted in the suspension of one of the questioned judges, who approved the early release of former vice president Jorge Glas (2013-2017).
