MEXICO: Controversial telephone registry put to bed

Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) this week ruled that it was unconstitutional to oblige mobile phone users to provide biometric data for a nationwide registry. The national institute for transparency and access to information (Inai) and civil society organisations have hailed the ruling as a victory for users’ rights to privacy, data protection, and access to mobile communication. However, the ruling serves as a blow for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), who had promoted the contentious registry as a tool for combating crimes such as extortion, fraud, and kidnapping.
