In brief: Vehicle sales down in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the latest figures for sales of light vehicles, which shows that 83,459 vehicles were sold in April 2022, a 1% decrease on April 2021. This represents the eight consecutive year-on-year decrease in sales, starting with September 2021. In month-on-month terms, sales fell 12.4%, with 95,199 vehicles sold in March, marking the first monthly decrease of the year although sales remained higher than January and February levels. In the first four months of 2022, 336,841 new light vehicles were sold, a 2.4% decrease on the 345,126 sold in the same period of 2021. Mexico’s automobile distributors’ association (Amda) has attributed the decrease to the shortage of semiconductors and rising inflation.
