Venezuela: On 2 May US Secretary of State
Antony Blinken spoke with Venezuela’s opposition leader
Juan Guaidó, who is recognised by the US and other countries as Venezuela’s interim president, to
“underscore the importance of a peaceful restoration of democracy in Venezuela, free and fair elections, and respect for the rights and freedoms of all Venezuelans”. According to the US State Department press release, in the phone call Blinken reaffirmed the US commitment to the talks between the Venezuelan government led by
Nicolás Maduro and opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria as the “
best path for a return to democracy and for resolving Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis”. Blinken also reiterated US support for the “
2015 democratically elected national assembly and for Guaidó as Venezuela’s interim president”.
