NICARAGUA: Crackdown continues

Liz Throssell, the United Nations Human Rights spokesperson, this week expressed concern about a new law which has recently taken effect in Nicaragua which she warns “further restricts the functioning of civil society”. Her statement came days after Nicaragua’s 92-member unicameral legislature, which, like all other institutions in the country, is controlled by President Daniel Ortega’s nominally left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), approved the closure of a further 50 NGOs, in a further indication of his government’s determination to shut down civic space.
