ARGENTINA: Friendly fire intensifies

Kirchnerismo is trying to usurp the role of Argentina’s right-of-centre Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) coalition as the main opposition to the government led by President Alberto Fernández. It is an audacious move, not least because the figurehead of the movement, Cristina Fernández, remains vice president. Fresh from questioning the legitimacy of President Fernández, the vice president delivered a speech this week savaging his government’s economic policy. Although she insisted this was part of a debate, it deepened an acrimonious dispute within the ruling left-of-centre Frente de Todos (FdT) coalition. The economy minister, Martín Guzmán, responded by accusing her government of having created a time bomb with unsustainable fuel subsidies that are politically unpalatable to remove.
