GUATEMALA: Giammattei ends speculation over attorney general

Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei has reappointed María Consuelo Porras to the post of attorney general after her four-year term was due to expire this month. His 16 May announcement regarding Porras, who is widely discredited and was sanctioned by the US in September 2021 for obstructing corruption investigations [WR-21-39], has prompted outrage, both locally and abroad, fanning existing fears regarding a deterioration in the rule of the law in the country.
