Mexico - May 2022

Around 1.2m international tourists were expected to visit the Mexican state of Quintana Roo over the Easter holidays, a 36.6% increase on the year before. However, tourists were not the only ones to descend on Quintana Roo’s popular Caribbean beaches over the holiday period. Hundreds of members of the army, navy and national guard (GN) were deployed around the state in a bid to ward off the violence that has increasingly plagued Quintana Roo’s tourist hotspots in recent months, a problem which the first piece in this May 2022 issue of the Latin American Regional Report: Mexico explores.
