PERU: Reshuffle unlikely to offer quick Las Bambas fix

Peru’s President Pedro Castillo announced yet another cabinet reshuffle on 22 May, replacing four ministers including Interior Minister Alfonso Chávarry and Mining & Energy Minister Carlos Sabino Palacios. Both had faced mounting calls to stand down over the month-long paralysis at the Las Bambas copper mine in the southern region of Apurímac, where operations have been suspended in response to fierce protests by local residents. Their replacement may temporarily placate right-wing opposition parties, but it has also incurred the wrath of Castillo’s main ally in congress, the far-left Perú Libre (PL).
