ECUADOR: Supreme court president suspended

The president of Ecuador’s supreme court, Iván Saquicela, was suspended for 90 days on 20 May by the judicial council (CJ), the body responsible for overseeing the conduct of judges and magistrates. Accused by the CJ of “negligence” in the processing of an extradition request, Saquicela has claimed that his suspension is aimed at ensuring impunity for former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), whose extradition from Belgium is being sought by President Guillermo Lasso’s government.
